CERT Goes To The Airport And Gets Burnt Up!

Wed Jun 24, 2009, 8:37 AM
Critical Info Update!!!
COMSEC Assistance Request
If anyone is on Twitter, please set your location to Tehran and your time zone to GMT +3.30. Security forces are hunting for bloggers using location/timezone searches. The more people at this location, the more of a logjam it creates for forces trying to shut Iranians' access to the internet down. Please pass this on to other sites as well. (COMSEC = Communications Security)

For those of you that may not know I am a volunteer member of the City of Chicago's Office Of Emergency Management And Communication (OEMC) Community Emergency Response Team also known CERT. One could think of us as a modern day version of the old Civil Defense operations.

Today our CERT team responded to an interesting request for assistance with a disaster drill held at Midway Airport involving many role players that needed ‘moulage’ or fake injury makeup. Nurses from the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council rapidly trained CERT team members in the fine art of moulage. All of the “wounds” you see in the images are made with just a smear of Vaseline, a dusting of makeup grade powder color pigments, single ply Kleenex tissues to simulate blistered or torn skin and Popsicle sticks to simulate impaled objects or bones.

Yours truly got behind his camera and took a few pictures of the action. Please go to [link] to view a slideshow of the drill.

There is also panographic image at [link] showing an overall view of the entire drill on the airfield. (You will need to click on image to open the control to expand it to full size for your screen.) If printed out the full size the panographic image would be over 28 inches tall by 131 inches long! Shot with a hand held camera and washed through Autostitch.

CERT is quite an interesting program and I would strongly urge you to see if your community or region has an active team you could join up with. Information about CERT can be found here: [link]
